St Joseph's Year 5 & 6 Girls football team have been practising every lunchtime since September with Mr Ford & Coach Jamie from FA Lidl scheme. On Friday 3rd November they took part in their 1st match of the season against a very strong opposition in Surbiton High School. The girls were very excited and spirits were high as they put on the blue St Joseph's football kit for the 1st time. Every girl was excited at the prospect of representing their school on our home pitch against another school. The practice began to show through as St Joseph's took an early 2 goal lead, with goals from star striker Melanie & Jenifer. The football was fast and frantic and Surbiton began to grow into the game and eventually managed to get the score back to 2-2. The game was gripped and the excitement had attracted a very large crowd with children from St Joseph's and parents from both schools now taking up positions on the sideline. A good save from St Joseph's goalie Lys kept the score at 2-2. With just seconds to go, Lys released the ball quickly over the heads of the surbiton defenders with speedy striker Melanie in pursuit, she managed to latch onto the long ball and finish past the Surbiton goalie to make it 3-2 to St Joseph's. A cheer erupted from the onlooking crowd and St Joseph's managed to hold on to be victorious. The win will hopefully be the start of a great year of football for the girls team as they look to improve their skills further.
